What is a conveyor belt?

Definition, components and common industrial uses of conveyor belts.

A conveyor belt is a continuous conveying system made of an endless belt running over rollers or pulleys. Its purpose is to move materials or products safely and consistently between process points.

Main components: belt (PVC, PU, modular or metal depending on the application), drive and tail pulleys, idlers or slide bed, frame and tension/tracking system.

Typical uses: food & beverage production, intralogistics and parcel handling, mining and aggregates, light manufacturing, pharma and cosmetics.

Material choice depends on load, temperature, friction, hygiene requirements and product compatibility. Proper design reduces downtime, energy consumption and maintenance costs.
